Book review: Playing Big: Find Your Voice, Your Mission, Your Message by Tara Mohr
I can’t recommend this book enough. Tara provides us with a comprehensive ‘how to’ guide on playing big in your career, finding your mission and your message.
The advice is practical and easy to incorporate into your life and therefore, in my view, likely to have a positive impact for you.
It’s a great read as the author has an easy and ‘big sister’ tone. She does this by combining warmth, academic research and ‘saying it as it is.’
Case studies are drawn not only from clients but her own experiences of overcoming the same challenges, the book is not at all preachy
The topics Tara covers include
- Your best self
- Dealing with your inner critic
- My favourite – living your purpose
- Managing your fears
- Communicating with impact and much much more.
This book comes in a range of formats from a traditional book, audio, and kindle. Something for all your needs.
As we head into new year, if you read only one book this winter, this is the one.

MARK ZUCKERBERG: ‘Finding your purpose isn’t enough’
He’s right. Once you have found your purpose you have to live it. Thats why I love Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. Wow, is she on a mission, with her call to action for all women to ‘lean in’.
Taking action can be scary and overbearing though. You can just feel stuck. Even if you’ve tried and read every self-help book from Amazon (which is literally thousands by the way). If you want to overcome blocks and take massive action, then you’re ready to work with me.
If you can dream it, I can help you achieve it.
So much is possible if you have the courage to live your life by design, instead of by default.
That’s why I named my company vi e-et-animo. It’s Latin for strength and courage. Apply to work with me here.
Having a purpose isn’t just about having more impact in the world. The benefits from your contribution in the world flow back to you. The new study found that people:
- had a lower risk of heart disease
- lived longer and,
- slept better
Check out the short vide for a summary.
Why should I bother with a purpose? Four really good reasons:
- YOU are 64% more likely to have higher level of career satisfaction
- YOU are 50% more likely to be a leader
- YOU are 42% more likely to have career contentment and live longer
- YOU are more likely to have a higher income and have a higher net worth
While the value of a purpose is clear, it can be easier said than done. But dont worry, in a few simple weeks you will have the opportunity to stop dreaming of a career with purpose and actually get one. Sign up for my masterclass. Its free and on line here.
Shonda Rhimes is a legend screenwriter. She is responsible for How To Get Away With Murder, Greys Anatomy, Catch, Private Practice and Scandal. These are just to name a few. She has achieved phenomenal success where she owns Thursday nights. This is called Shonda land- when three of her programs play back to back in the US. This alone is enough to explain why I would be supporting Shonda Rimes’ masterclass.
But her personal success isn’t my actual reason. Her phenomenal success is how I know about her. I support her because she is a woman of purpose and she claims that in her work.I’ve heard a couple of interviews where she talks about her need to represent the diverse faces that she sees in her everey day life in her TV shows. What a phenomenal game changer she has been. First prime time tv show to have a black female lead in 40 years (Scandal). Having a purpose I think is the reason behind her success. Check out what she says about having purpose here.
