Inspiring Events, Part 2

WP_20151027_20_03_18_Pro

This is the second of three instalments of my inspiring events series this month.  It was a coaching network event by London Coaches. I was pleasantly surprised and wanted to share some of the ideas in the hope you would find it useful.

The trainer asked us to think about the stories we play out on our lives, the:

  • Characters
  • Location
  • Genres
  • Plot lines

He asked one powerful question: Would changing one of the above elements get you
better outcome/story?

For example,  do you play the warrior at work but nothing works, everyone is screaming -a horror story. The trainer suggested instead using the character of jester to see if this changes up the energy and gets better outcomes, the story you want. That is slaying the dragon/reaching work goal via humour.

My take away was to be mindful of the narratives we have about ourselves and situations and not to get locked into stories that don’t service you- be flexible. You are the director.

Try it!

Enjoy!

Inspiring Events, Part 1

b b2 b3

This is the first of three posts on inspiring events I attended recently. TEDx Brixton is a very special event to me and dear to my heart as I was involved in the founding two events.

This event is curated by a fabulous leader and woman, who has become a friend. In this third instalment, TEDx Brixton has expanded and became bigger and better. Live stream was provided at venues around Brixton.

Amazing stories where shared. The speaker that stood out for me was that of the Muslim Trans who talked about his journey of courage.   What happens in between talks is equally as powerful, conversations, new found friends, old found friends and of course thinking. Videos will be uploaded soon here if you missed it: http://tedxbrixton.com/

Get to one near you! You can find out more here: http://www.ted.com/about/programs-initiatives/tedx-program

Oprah on Leadership

I’m really excited to share this video with you today. Oprah is an impressive individual and a personal inspiration to me. She has accomplished so much and overcome many challenges. As her first-hand testimony will show – a lot of hard work goes a long way.

The lesson that most struck me in this video was the importance of her own inner journey to her outward success. Oprah talks a lot about her self reflection. The ‘how’ and the ‘why’ questions behind what we do in work. This stood out to me, as often we think about what we want at work. What we want to be paid. What company we want to work in. What promotion we want next. Oprah talks a lot about mission, giving and contribution through our work. A great lens to look at leadership.

This is an extended video at over an hour long. It’s well worth it.

Let me know what your take aways were.

Enjoy!

Aspire to Lead

This is fantastic video on female leadership and confidence. I watched this web cast, live with thousands of others across the world- very exciting as we run up to International Women’s Day 2015.

The panel featured ‘The Confidence Code’ authors – Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, Eileen Naughton – Managing Director of Google UK and Ireland and Mike Fenlon PwC’s Global and US Talent leader.

This webcast is worth watching as it talks about:

  • the importance of risk taking
  • the benefits of taking action versus over-analysing,
  • how to build your own authentic confidence code,
  • how central it is to support others even if that means saying whats needs to be said
  • and finally do things even if you feel afraid.

There is plenty more -really insightful stuff.

Enjoy!
